About the Journal
J Open: GIS and Environmental Monitoring is an international, peer-reviewed, open access academic journal dedicated to advancing research and practice in the fields of geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and geospatial technologies for environmental monitoring and analysis.
The journal provides a scholarly platform for researchers, scientists, environmental specialists, policymakers, and practitioners to disseminate high-quality research findings, innovative methodologies, and theoretical developments related to the observation, assessment, modeling, and management of environmental systems.
The journal aims to promote the application of geospatial technologies and satellite data in understanding environmental processes, climate change, and natural resource dynamics. It welcomes original research articles, review papers, case studies, and theoretical contributions that address contemporary challenges in environmental monitoring, spatial analysis, geoinformatics, and environmental decision-making.
Key Features
- Open Access – All articles are freely available online to ensure maximum visibility, accessibility, and global dissemination of research.
- Double-Blind Peer Review – Each submission undergoes a rigorous evaluation process by independent experts to maintain high academic standards and research integrity.
- Interdisciplinary Focus – The journal promotes interdisciplinary research by integrating geography, ecology, geoinformatics, environmental science, and engineering to address complex environmental challenges.
- International Editorial Board – The journal is supported by an international team of scholars and experts ensuring subject-specific expertise and scientific quality.
- Publication Frequency – The journal is published four times a year — in March, June, September, and December. Special issues focusing on emerging environmental challenges and advanced geospatial technologies may also be published.
Scope of the Journal
The journal focuses on a broad range of topics related to GIS, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. It covers theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of spatial analysis and environmental assessment at global, regional, and local scales.
It includes, but is not limited to, research on GIS-based spatial analysis, geospatial modeling, digital cartography, web mapping, geodatabases, and GeoAI (integration of artificial intelligence with GIS).
The journal also covers remote sensing and satellite-based monitoring, including satellite imagery analysis, drone and aerial observations, land use and land cover analysis, vegetation, water, and soil monitoring, as well as time-series analysis of environmental changes.
In addition, the journal welcomes studies on environmental monitoring systems, ecological assessment, natural resource management, environmental risk mapping, and spatial analysis of ecosystems.
Special attention is given to research on climate change monitoring, modeling of environmental and natural processes such as drought, desertification, and floods, disaster risk assessment, environmental forecasting, and spatial decision-making for sustainable development.
The journal also encourages applied research focusing on GIS-based decision support systems, environmental monitoring of urban and regional areas, water, land, and forest resource management, agricultural planning, and geospatial analysis for environmental policy development.
The journal supports interdisciplinary and data-driven research approaches and promotes innovative solutions for effective environmental monitoring and sustainable resource management.
Indexing & Archiving
The journal is committed to achieving broad visibility and impact. It is actively working towards indexing in Scopus, Web of Science, DOAJ, Google Scholar, and other leading academic databases.
The journal is preserved through the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN).
This service ensures long-term digital preservation of all published content by providing a decentralised and distributed archiving system. The PKP PN uses the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) program to create permanent, secure, and recoverable backups of the journal.
In addition, authors are permitted to archive published versions of their articles in institutional repositories, personal websites, and other open-access archives without restrictions.
